Polaris

Inspired by the brightest star in the constellation ‘Polaris’ references the City’s nautical heritage; a compass rose is surrounded by the points of a star. Simultaneously evoking celestial navigation and “following the star”, with the compass that always points North.

The artwork acts as a large glowing beacon in the heart of Liverpool that draws the viewer in, immerses them in a central Compass of Light and then invites them to travel through the surrounding constellation of columns, each intended to represent the pillars of Liverpool’s culture; the people, music, art, trade, education and sport.

The artwork pays homage to how far and wide Liverpool’s culture has spread and in return the world-wide influences seen in the city today.
